A collection of music composed between 2012-2014, mostly for wind instruments, but also with some for cello and piano!

The 10 inventions for flute and clarinet were composed in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 2012. At the time I was practicing the 15 Two-Part inventions by J.S. Bach, as well as listening to Prokofiev. I think these were the two main musical influences. What inspired me to write for flute and clarinet specifically was when I heard, in 2011, the duets for flute and clarinet by Robert Muczynski (performed by Amy Hamilton and Peter Shackleton, to whom the pieces are dedicated). I fell in love with the way the two voices could weave around each other and create overtones, something that found it’s way (unintentionally) into no. 7. Also, the dexterity and range of the instruments is fantastic, and I wanted to contribute to the repertoire of such great instruments! The goal was to create 15 to mirror the 15 Two-Part inventions, but I never got there. Maybe some day!

The Six Scenes for Clarinet and Piano are explorations of depicting a setting in a short length of time. Each one (excluding the last) is meant to evoke a natural setting, such as a swamp or meadow. They explore the ways in which sounds come in and out without regularity in these natural environments, although with an underlying structure we tend to miss when listening.

The Portrait for Solo Cello is an exploration of the different techniques one can achieve on the cello, such as double-stop harmonics, playing over the fingerboard, over the bridge, simultaneously doing pizz/arco, playing with the wood of the bow, and the like. In this I tried to juxtapose expressive with inexpressive sounds, singing in some parts, and in others trying to create an affect, such as creating the sense of an open space, through use of sound.

The Portrait for Solo Flute consists of an introduction and a scherzo. The introduction is a solitary voice, plaintively singing out - this is followed by a quick and virtuosic scherzo with lots of my favorite chord, the major 7th.

The Portrait for Clarinet explores as much juxtaposition in emotive as I could, rushing at one point and plaintively singing in the next. It sounds to me something like a chase, but with an ominous beginning and end.

The recordings were done with help by Mike Anderson in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall. The portrait for solo cello was made in Friedman hall at the University of Ottawa.

Artists featured are Jaeyoung Chong (cello), Peter Shackleton (clarinet), Amy Hamilton (flute) and Keenan Reimer-Watts (piano).
